Project YouthFinLit partnered with Building Bridges to host virtual seminars with Chinese youth. Volunteers introduced them to topics ranging from wants and needs to the basics of budgeting. Throughout the presentation, teaching volunteers asked students' questions pertaining to the topic. Students were able to answer the finance-related questions in no time, showing off their quick ability to learn. Project YouthFinLit hopes to continue working with various international organizations to expose youth to financial literacy concepts.
The different classes taught included different content based on the age of children being taught. For our first virtual seminar, we started off with an overview of budgeting and the importance of planning and allocating one's money. As kids tend to desire lots of unnecessary things, teaching them about budgeting helps to control their spending. Teachers played different games to show them how budgeting works in the real world and utilized resources such as Brain Pop to engage them as well.
Our second virtual seminar was about entrepreneurship and counting money. Teachers provided students with practice using bills and coins and introduced them to the concept of entrepreneurship. PYFL presentation slides included famous entrepreneurs and their stories as well as the benefits of "being your own boss". A step-by-step approach to starting a new business was also taught during this seminar.
To make our seminars as useful to students as possible, we make sure to ask questions to reinforce learning and clarify any doubts. The kids are eager to learn and we are more than happy to teach them all about financial literacy!
